Low Smoke, - Single Conductors


The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has worked to create new specifications that address a need for single conductors that will meet the current U.S. Navy requirements for smoke, toxicity, and acid gas. The U.S. Navy will be upgrading their specifications to have a new requirement that the single insulated conductors will be halogen free. NEMA Types that begin with the ZH designation will meet this requirement. The single insulated conductors are required to be manufactured with either an irradiation cross-linked polyolefin or silicone insulation.

Spec Slant Sheets

 

Low Smoke, Zero Halogen, Silicone
These singles are rated for applications where temperatures are as high as 150°C. They are very flexible, and will meet the VW-1 flame test. The wire is rated for use at 600V for Type ZHS.

Rockbestos-Surprenant Cable Corporation uses a proprietary insulation for this application that far exceeds the durability of most silicones.

NEMA HP6

Low Smoke, Zero Halogen, Irradiation Cross-Linked Polyolefin
These singles are rated for applications where temperatures are as high as 125°C. They do not contain halogenated flame retardants, yet they will meet the VW-1 flame test. The wire is rated for use at 600V for Type ZH, and 1000V for Type ZHX.

NEMA HP8
Low Smoke, Irradiation Cross-Linked Polyethylene
These singles are rated for applications where temperatures are as high as 125°C. They meet the VW-1 flame test. The Type LS wire is rated for use at 600V.
